My 2018 Wish List

So, 2017 has been a really weird year.

It's been the kind of year where everything that we were scared of a couple of years ago has come true, but to the backdrop of a B-list 'Simpsons' episode.

Unfortunately for any reasonable thinking person, President Donald J Trump has dominated the news in 2017, either with another controversial measure like his Muslim ban or the repealing of Obamacare, or his tweets. Regardless of the situation, rest assured that Donald Trump will either have a comment about it or will be at the centre of a democratic shit-storm because of his use of 140 characters.

But, aside from the new 'Trumpmerica' (thank you CNN for that little title), the world had other, perhaps more important, things to confront.

The UK saw three awful terrorist attacks in London and Manchester, North Korea looked as though it might be about to inadvertently trigger a third world war and Zimbabwe became somewhat democratic again.

But, perhaps, the biggest story (outside of Trump) to dominate global headlines was the #MeToo movement, that arose as the result of multiple allegations made against high profile figures in many different industries. Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey to name but a handful of people accused. It cannot be understated how brave the victims of these attacks are coming forward and, if all accounts are true, it looks like we could now have a proper societal shift about the relationship between men and women in the adult world, especially those in any profession.

(Basic message to guys here, just don't harass women without consent. Pretty simple really!)

But with these things and more leaving 2017 as one of the most memorable years on record. arguably, what are my personal wishes for 2018?

I've written a blog before. But it was kind of a blank canvas. I could write whatever I wanted about and that would be that. But, for part of an extended new years resolution, I've decided to revisit blog writing. This time, making it more of a comment article for world events rather than random stuff about my life.

So, here are 3 wishes of mine for 2018 in terms of world events.

1. Donald Trump doesn't get as much attention as he does.

Kind of an obvious one but, while he is newsworthy, I honestly wish that news stations talk about other things. Because, let's face it, he's a racist old man with penchant for technology. That's not OVERLY newsworthy. But, I can also understand he sells. Two things that sell: Donald Trump and Sex. Thankfully, not at the same time. I hope.

Either way, I hope that news stations find more important topics to talk about rather than the Toddler-In-Chief.

2. I hope we get justice for the survivors of Grenfell Tower.

In June this year, the United Kingdom was devestated to find that Grenfell Tower, in London, suffered an awful fire that killed over 70 people, at an estimate. Since then, the response has been littered with seemingly empty promises and platitudes. Prime Minister Theresa May handled the response very badly and, 6 months on, we are still none the wiser. The residents nearby have to wake up in the shadow of the scorched tower every morning and it's an awful reminder for the UK on how cutting corners can kill.

I hope that 2018 brings more hope and justice for all those people affected by the fire.

3. I hope the world just chills out a bit.

At the risk of sounding like a proper idealistic Millennial, I hope that we have the right conversations. #MeToo appears to be a step in the right direction but there are so many other things that need talking about. Let's have a discourse that ends the Syrian and Yemeni civil wars. Let's figure out more ways to stop, or at best halt, the effects of climate change and let's figure out a way to talk about some of the world's most pressing issues.

Again, idealistic. But if #MeToo has the desired effect, and it goes to a good place, it'll prove that we as a species can have the right conversation and deal with things.

Well, if John Lennon can dream, so can I.

I look forward to speaking with you in 2018 about a range of issues. Perhaps you'll like what I have to say or maybe not. Huh. We'll see.

See you then!
