For anyone who knows me well, you'll know I'm a musician. And for those who don't, well I'm a musician. I'm currently working on a new EP that will hopefully be out next year, all being well. (I know I always say that and I will continue trying until it occurs).
But during the writing for this EP, I've been trying to work out what kind of music I want to do. I wrote two songs recently that are in the style of music I wrote with my first band, Against The Tide. They're called 'I Grew Up On Music' and 'Thoughts & Prayers'. I Grew Up On Music is about the songs that I loved growing up and how they affected me, with some songs affecting me now as well. Meanwhile, Thoughts & Prayers was written about the recent Parkland school shooting in the US and how the White House and NRA, in my opinion, is complicit in the murder of children. Cheery stuff.
Anyway, I might actually record Thoughts & Prayers but I don't think I'll record I Grew Up On Music. But I like the lyrics to both so, I thought I'd share them here.
This is 'I Grew Up On Music'. It would be an acoustic track.
'Put some on Otis Redding as I sit on the dock of the bay
And can someone please tell Meat Loaf that, as always, heaven can wait
Someone please help George Michael, I think that he's losing his faith
And, darling, please let Prince in 'coz he's caught in the Purple Rain
They're only songs but they've shaped who I am
And that's fine
Just give me some good rock and roll and I'll have the best time
And I don't care if it's just Bowie and Queen
But I grew up on music
And that's the best way to be...
Somebody tell Mr Clapton that he's wonderful tonight
Though in the spirit of the Eagles, I can't tell you why
And Sam Cooke is always saying that a change is gonna come
But if you listen to the Beatles, the revolution has already begun
They're only songs but they've shaped who I am
And that's fine
Just give me some good rock and roll and I'll have the best time
And I don't care if it's just Bowie and Queen
But I grew up on music
And that's the best way to be...
And Blondie will never get over their broken heart of glass
While I'm singing Billy Joel in a year 9 history class
And in some small town harbour, Brandy wants to run away
So the knights of Cydonia use Starlight to guide her way
They're only songs but they've shaped who I am
And that's fine
Just give me some good rock and roll and I'll have the best time
And I don't care if it's just Bowie and Queen
But I grew up on music
And that's the best way to be...
(Short instrumental)
Please turn on one more light
So the Parkers can find their way...'
And this is 'Thoughts & Prayers'. This would be a heavy rock number.
'The hallways are quiet now
And you could hear a penny drop
But someone is out of luck
Because nobody gave a fuck
Can you see the children run?
The media circus has just begun
But they're just photos, friends and names
And the weapons are not to blame
You want to save their babes
But they're sons and daughters, bred for the slaughter
They wanna change your ways
So ignore the victims, stick with the system
You send your thoughts and prayers
But they're not enough to save!
The hallways are quiet now
And the floors are stained with blood
Broken memories
Along with empty promises
Can you see the children cry?
As they relive the horror inside
But they're just photos, friends and names
And the weapons are not to blame
You want to save their babes
But they're sons and daughters, bred for the slaughter
They wanna change your ways
So ignore the victims, stick with the system
You send your thoughts and prayers
But they're not enough to save!
[Instrumental]
You want to save their babes
But they're sons and daughters, bred for the slaughter
They wanna change your ways
So ignore the victims, there's nothing wrong with the system
You're owned by the NRA
And that's not a way to save...'
Hope you liked them.
